Who Killed Chanel Petro-Nixon: The Street’s Code Of Silenece Continues To Hinder Justice For Brooklyn Honor Roll Teen

Over the years I have written many Human Interest Stories that have touched me deeply, but occasionally I encounter a story that strikes right down to the very inner core of most compassionate, God fearing, and Civilized People. We struggle to discern the premise for violent acts by mankind, and are only left to ponder the very nature of certain crimes and the mentality of those who commit such barbaric, heinous, and abhorrent acts against what we have come to understand to be the norm for humanity. Not only that, however, we face the unfortunate realization that, as we seek and desire to rid ourselves of such Alien Human Traits, there are those within our Society whom are willing to standby, observe, condone, and speak not against that which is clearly evil, for no other provocation other than to maintain so called “Street Credibility”.

This same “Street Cred” has been a stumbling block for Police Authorities investigating the murder of a Teen Honor Roll Student from Brooklyn, N.Y. for nearly 4 1/2 years. On June 18, 2006 (Father’s Day) the Beautiful Chanel Petro-Nixon left her home to visit a friend just a few blocks away, and to visit a local Applebee’s Restaurant to fill out a Job Application, but she would never be seen alive again. When the Petro-Nixon child failed to return home her mother sounded the alarm that something must have gone desperately wrong. The petite, friendly, and outgoing child had never failed to either call or come home after dark. In cases like this one can only image the horror, concern, and desperation a parent feels, only wanting to simply hear the sound of their child’s voice confirming that their alright and not in harm’s way. Those hopes would soon be dashed forever when a local Sanitation Crew discovered an unusually heavy load of trash during their pickup rounds on a Brooklyn street corner 4 days after Chanel had gone missing. Upon a close inspection, Police would soon reveal that a body was stuffed in a trash bag and discarded out on to the street curb like common garbage, and that the remains was in fact that of the sweet loving Petro-Nixon kid.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office would confirm that Chanel had been murdered by strangulation. As the investigation moved on, other clues would seem to aid Police in finding her killer. Police say Chanel’s white Air Force 1 sneakers and her Samsung 8200 Cell Phone were missing, leading authorities to believe that Chanel may have been the victim of a robbery homicide. Local News Media, Clergy, and Civil Rights activist, Rev. Al Sharpton have been actively seeking help from the community. “Some one knows what happen to this child, and needs to come forward”, says Sharpton. The Petro-Nixon murder has even sparked some rare National Attention from America’s Most Wanted T.V. Journalist, John Lieberman, and a very uncommon occurrence for a murdered African American Teen. Also, the NAACP has joined the hunt for Justice for Chanel Petro-Nixon, even offering a reward:

An initial reward of $12,000 was offered by police. [9] It was reported in the August 11, 2006 edition of the New York Daily News that:

“The Daily News has joined with the city and several private organizations to offer nearly $30,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Chanel’s killer. The News also has paid to print hundreds of posters calling for the public to help catch the killer. Cops asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.”

I personally believed that the uncharacterized attention and pursuit of the “Heartless Monster” who killed this child is due to the complete isolated, random, and unforeseen tragedy that fell upon this average kid. This could have been anyone’s child. The fact that the person who took this precious girl away from us still remains at large is very unsettling. Far too often in the African American Community we fail to aid in the effort to render Justice for our own people. We continue to adopt the “it’s not my problem” mentality, passive, or scared approach toward attacks upon us. We continue to be the greatest detriment to the oppression of our culture. Moreover, as a Black Man I can’t help but mention that this is one of our female children. The Black Woman continues to remain the most highly disrespected female on the face of the Earth. We should be outraged and drawn to the brink of complete all-out War when harm of any kind is enacted against our Women. She is and always will be the Institution of our existence as her species bares the fruit of humanity.

To those who remain idle, hidden, and cowardly remain silent, I must say that you are equally accused, as your actions or lack thereof only serves to aid and abet the very opportunity of the very nature of evil to manifest. Justice for Chanel Petro-Nixon must come even at the expense of the loss of other human life.
