The Bishop Eddie Long Saga: A Time For Perspective And Reflection

By now many have seen the photos, the viral videos on Youtube,  and other Social Network Media, as well as the seemingly endless barage of  jokes on Facebook, Black Planet, and My Space surrounding the allegations that Bishop Eddie Long, of  the Atlanta based New Birth Christian Ministry, has been engaging in love trice with Male Members of his Church. The recent allegations against Long come as a particular shocking surprise as the self anointed Backwoods Style Preacher has been under fire for his anti-gay views.  Long a Nationally recognized Christian Leader has endured much embarrassment since the story broke, while images of the Preacher have surfaced over the internet with him doning extremely tight Spandex Speedo Brand  clad Athletic Wear that many of the alleged victims have said were sent to them by Long. I won’t get into the specific details of what the allegations claim, but in many respects the Minister’s reputation has taken a mighty blow. While there are those who stand steadfastly in Pastor Long’s corner, there are many in his own camp that question his judgement. It pronbably is a common trait for Christians alike to stand by their Pastor in times of great upheaval, specifically when you have been a faithful member of his Ministry and delved into your pockets tirelessly to shell out money to help build what is now refered to as a Mega Church. The Elders of the New Birth Church are calling for calm and patience as the matter runs it’s course. Some how there are people willing to accept the setup theory, meaning Long’s anti-gay bashing has earned him the scorn of many within the Gay Community, who have now reared their ugly heads to take revenge, and are making false allegations against the Pastor for his continued and dogged campaign against Gay Lifestyles.  I am a firm believer that people are entitled to believe what ever they choose, however, I can’t express my concerns enough related to the kinds of images Pastor Long May have been sending various young males within New birth Ministries. I have to admit as a parent, I would take serious issue if my Pastor were sending those kind of images to my child’s Cell Phone. In fact I don’t think I would feel comfortable with the Pastor Having my kid’s Cell Number in the first place. For what purpose were those pictures sent to these kids? This is not the kind of perspective I would want my child to possess of his Pastor. Not only that, but Pastor Long as the Senior member of New Birth should conduct himself in a fashion befitting that of a Christian Leader, a person of Authority, and an Elder of the Church. Those images leave serious doubt on the allegations having been fabricated, and have painted a horrible image in the minds of fellow Christians, Ministers,members of his Church, as well as having suddenly landed Bishop Eddie Long on the threshhold of  becoming the complete laughing stock of the entire World Christian Community. For years Long has been preaching about how sinful Gay Lifestyles were. His campaign against the Gay Community even drew strong criticism from fellow Christian Ministers. Now if these allegations prove to be valid, Long would forever be earmarked and labeled as the Poster Child for Modern Hypocrisy. To those at new Birth and around the World who stand firmly behind Pastor Eddie Long during his very difficult time with unwithering faith, God bless you. In the Court of Law Criminally there must be evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, Civilly it must be a proponderance of the evidence, but in the eyes of the Court of Public opinion, images of a Spandex Speedo Clad Minister sent to young Male Members of his Church is a hell of a summation to overcome.
